Becoming a Wright Flyers member involves a few steps to meet model aviation safety requirements and complete your club application. Follow the guide below to get started.
Join the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)
AMA membership supports model aviation with liability insurance benefits, safety guidance, club resources and advocacy for the hobby. Have your AMA membership number ready for your Wright Flyers application.
- AMA offers membership options for adults and young pilots.
- Keep your membership number handy for the club application.
- Learn about AMA safety guidelines and its role as an FAA-recognized Community-Based Organization (CBO).
Complete the TRUST Safety Test
The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) is a free online training and safety test for recreational flyers. It covers aviation safety, airspace rules and responsible operations.
- The test is available online at no cost.
- Take the test through AMA, an FAA-approved TRUST administrator.
- Save or print your completion certificate and keep proof available when flying.
Register with the FAA
Recreational unmanned aircraft weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) must be registered with the FAA. The FAA DroneZone is the official place to complete recreational registration.
- Use the FAA DroneZone recreational flyer registration process.
- Mark aircraft that require registration with the FAA registration number.
- Keep proof of registration available when you fly.
